Okay, so everyone knows Paris is the City of Light and filled with romantic spots to get cozy with someone special. There’s no denying the allure, and if you’ve been keeping up with my travels then you know I love Paris hotels with Eiffel Tower views for how dreamy it is! But let’s be real, Paris isn’t the only romantic destination in the world. In fact, some of the most romantic travel destinations are hidden gems that aren’t quite as well known.
Want a little romance that’s off the beaten path? I’ve got you covered.
From sunny beaches to cozy coastal areas, check out these lesser-known romantic destinations that’ll have you feeling all the love-y vibes without the overwhelming crowds. So even though it’s great, forget Paris for now and look at 5 of the most romantic destinations in the world where love is always in the air!
Why Go To Lesser Known Romantic Vacation Spots?
Choosing lesser-known romantic vacation spots isn’t just about avoiding crowds (though that’s a huge perk sometimes). It’s about finding a place that feels special and more intimate. These are the places where every experience feels more personal and you can create unique memories that not everyone gets to have.
Over the years, what I’ve found is that when you venture off the typical tourist trail, you’ll find cool places that stay with you way after you’ve returned home.
Some of the reasons I prefer lesser-known spots for unique romantic vacations are:
- They’re typically less crowded so you’re not feeling overwhelmed by people.
- It may be cheaper so you can stay longer.
- Making unique memories and travel stories.
- You’re getting a more authentic cultural experience.
- Check out cool landscapes that aren’t loaded with tourists.
My Top Picks for the Most Romantic Destinations in the World
There are countless places in the world that could set the stage for romance, but finding those lesser-known gems is like uncovering a secret. Here are my top picks for romantic destinations you might not have thought of.
Anywhere can be romantic with the right person and mindset, but lots of people tend to find themselves stuck on the usual spots like Paris. There’s nothing wrong with Paris, to be sure. I love it there! But I’ve been fortunate enough to venture out to little known romantic destinations and wanted to share them with you.
When you’re thinking about your next getaway, take a look at these spot romantic vacation spots:
- Zanzibar, Tanzania
- Santorini, Greece
- Oregon Coast, USA
- Ljubljana, Slovenia
- Sanur, Indonesia
1. Zanzibar, Tanzania
My list kicks things off strong with sunny, tropical Zanzibar, Tanzania. Zanzibar is an archipelago off the east coast of Africa and has so much to discover! I’m obsessed with the soft sandy beaches and there’s just something super romantic about the incredible sunsets there. It’s perfect for exploring new areas and relaxing with someone special.
On the main island of the archipelago, I went to check out Stone Town. It’s a historic town that’s labeled a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town has winding alleys, vibrant markets, and a rich history of Swahili culture so I really felt like I got a taste of what Zanzibar had to offer. It used to be the center of the spice trade in the 19th century — how cool is that?
After finishing with that for the day, I went back to one of the island’s incredible beach resorts to sip cocktails by the pool and have a candlelit dinner under the stars). When you’re decided where to stay in Zanzibar, you can’t really go wrong wherever you choose.
2. Santorini, Greece
Okay, so staying in Santorini, Greece might not be completely off the radar, but compared to Paris it still counts as one of the lesser-known most romantic destinations in the world. With its whitewashed buildings, gorgeous cliffs, and sparkling blue seas, this Greek island is basically made for feeling the love.
There are two main spots where people stay on Santorini: Fira (also called Thera or Thira) and Oia. The first one is the main city on the island but it’s a little more crowded (still less than Paris!). Oia is a picturesque little spot, and my personal favorite place to stay because of the iconic windmills. Oia is quieter and great for couples looking for a more secluded spot when choosing romantic travel destinations.
I started the day with breakfast overlooking the caldera (which I highly recommend!) then checked out the super cool black sand beaches. I also went to see incredible ancient caves and try out local wines at a vineyard. My time in Santorini is never long enough because I never want to leave!
Pro tip for couples? Consider going to this romantic getaway destination during the off season to avoid summer crowds. Even though they’re smaller than places like Paris, the narrow streets can feel a little crowded during peak season so that’s when I prefer to go.
3. Oregon Coast, USA
There are plenty of romantic destinations in the United States, too! One of my favorites is the Oregon Coast. It’s close enough to hotels in Portland, Oregon so I can do it as a day trip while still staying in the main city, but you can check out some of the cute little hotels along the coast if you don’t want to do the drive.
The Oregon Coast is a hidden gem that’s one of my faves for couples who love being out in nature while keeping up the cozy vibes. I’ve taken long walks on the beaches, gone hiking in impressive Pacific Northwest forests, and spent the evening cozied up by the fireplace. It’s all there and awesome to experience.
I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth, too, so I never miss the salt water taffy from the little shops all along the Oregon Coast. Gotta snag some sweets to bring with you as you’re exploring one of the best romantic vacation spots!
4. Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana, Slovenia (okay it’s pronounced “loo-blee-ah-nuh” — I had to ask, too) is Europe’s fairytale capital that honestly feels like it’s been pulled straight out of a storybook. It’s a smaller city that’s perfect for couples who love beautiful architecture, culture, and a little touch of whimsy. And who doesn’t love a little whimsy, right?
I love to take a romantic stroll along the Ljubljanica River and check out all the colorful buildings along the water. Then I’ll spend time in the cafes eating delicious food or having a coffee. I’ve also rented a paddleboat for a fun afternoon experience and visited Ljubljana Castle for panoramic views of the city that took my breath away. Can’t recommend all these activities enough!
In the evening, this is one the most romantic destinations in the world for a candlelit dinner. Enjoying the incredible food and trying local Slovenian wines was a real treat for me!
5. Sanur, Indonesia
Okay, last but not least on my list of the most romantic travel destinations that are off the beaten path comes Sanur, Indonesia. Bali might be famous for its party scene and Instagram-worthy spots, but Sanur is the quieter, more intimate side of the island that I love to visit. This is one of the most romantic destinations known for its laid-back vibe and beautiful beaches. It’s another hidden treasure anytime I’m looking for a peaceful retreat.
In Sanur, I like to start off the day with a sunrise walk along the beachfront promenade then get a traditional Balinese massage (one of the best I’ve ever had). Then I’ll go check out the local art scene, stop to eat the freshest seafood around, or just take the entire day to relax. No matter what you’re doing, in Sanur you’ll be surrounded by lush tropical gardens that just ooze romance.
Planning Ahead for Unique Romantic Vacations
When you’re planning a getaway to a lesser-known romantic destination, a little extra preparation goes a long way. I’m always one to try and think of all the possibilities, and I’ll share them with you so you won’t have any problems along the way!
One of the most important things to consider is the weather. Some of these romantic destinations have distinct rainy or off-seasons that could affect your travel dates. Be sure to check the best times to visit and plan ahead.
Another key tip? Invest in travel insurance. It’s worth it! You never know when plans might change.Travel insurance can give you peace of mind if you need to reschedule or cancel at the last minute.
Last up on my pro tips is to consider booking your hotels and activities early. Sure, these romantic vacation spots are often less crowded than places like Paris, but the best spots can still fill up quickly.
